Project: Tornado Response and Recovery project, 2019 Nepal

The Tornado Response and Recovery Project was implemented in Bara District, Province No. 2, Nepal, and funded by Caritas Nepal from 15 July 2019 to 30 February 2021. The project aimed to support households affected by the devastating tornado in Bara District through various livelihood, sanitation, and skill development activities.

A total of 536 individuals participated in the campaign — 240 men and 296 women, including 18 Dalits, 113 Janajatis, 16 Muslims, and 389 participants from OBC communities.

Key project activities and achievements included:

  • Promotion of Hygiene and Sanitation:
    The six steps of proper handwashing were demonstrated in three schools, involving 160 students, teachers, and School Management Committee members. Participants learned and practiced good sanitation and personal hygiene habits.
  • Distribution of WASH Kits:
    206 students received WASH kits containing a towel, soap, bottle of oil, toothpaste, toothbrush, and nail cutter.
  • Community Cleaning Initiatives:
    156 community members pledged to keep their communities and schools clean.
  • Skill Development in Mobile Repairing:
    20 people received training in mobile phone repair, improving their technical skills. The five best trainees received grants of NPR 20,000 each to establish their own mobile repair shops.
  • Livelihood Promotion and Microenterprise Support:
    Several beneficiaries initiated small businesses, including:
    • Kirana shop (1)
    • Fast food sales via rickshaw (1)
    • Dry fish sales (1)
    • Cosmetic item sales (2)
    • Stationary fast food stalls (4)
    • Vegetable sales (1)
      These enterprises helped participants secure a daily income ranging from NPR 300 to 1,000, enhancing their livelihoods and financial resilience.
  • Agricultural Support and Capacity Building:
    Beneficiaries received practical training on land selection, nursery preparation, seedling techniques, seasonal and off-season vegetable production, organic pest control, and product marketing. They were also provided with agricultural inputs, including 36 spray tanks6,221 kg of DAP fertilizer4,116 kg of urea1,257 kg of potash, and 38 packets of Safaya fungicide.
  • Housing Repair Support:
    65 beneficiaries received a total of 1,822 cement tiles for house repair and reconstruction.
